The Hysterical Today

May 11, 2010

However the ongoing political negotiations conclude, one thing is certain, the media have gone into mental meltdown. Objectivity is dismissed as irrelevant. Opinions – preferably angry, bulging-eyes, clinched fists and sweaty palms style – are the fashion. It seems we have morphed into Fox News (and not just SKY news) but a huge proportion of British news broadcasters. The behaviour, although not unexpected, has been equally hysterical from the written press.

Here are a couple of video nasties. The British General Election Media Breakdown.

Kay Burley attacks protester campaigning for democracy.

But, here – and don’t take my word for it – is the icing on the cake. Adam Boulton loses all his control, and if he ever had any, balance. He comes very close to physically squaring up to the buddha-like Alistair Campbell who is dying to wink to the camera – a nod to the audience who, he knew, would themselves be in hysterics or horror.

IN the space of five tumultuous days, Britain has gone from democracy as we know it to the brink of dictatorship.

Yes – that’s the largest newspaper in the UK. Full on hysterics. They haven’t recently adopted this approach, they are the market leaders. They must consider their own readers to be idiots of the most idiotic variety. The Independent published this, by Matthew Norman, who comments on the front-page recommendation of a certain music-mogul. Simon Cowell heralded as the orator of UK politics. The dictator. The decider. The messiah.

Media coverage in images before the election.

These blogs* were an absolute revelation for me during the election. A counter-balance of intelligent comment to counteract the constant state of hysterics spewing from the mainstream media. The future? I certainly hope so. The result of the election appears to be a Con (LibDem) coalition. Here are the opinions of deeplyflawedbuttrying – we could do a lot worse than listen.

Wow, I just need Anton Vowl and Chicken Yoghurt to complete the set :)

I’m constantly telling friends and family to abandon the majority of the media, and read all the different types of blogs. Political, media-analysis, satire, right-wing, left-wing, economics and news. They are full of opinion written by people who have a desire to write it, some rather better than others, coupled with the fact the vast majority do it without pay, just because they have the passion to do so, I love that. Independent thought is promoted and I hope beyond all hope that the future media is bottom-up rather than top down. It could make such a difference to the world we live in.
